The IPA Council Business Meeting was held on May in IVPP, Beijing, China
Time:2016-05-17
The International Palaeontological Association (IPA) Council Business Meeting was held on May 15th - 17th,
in the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology
(IVPP), Beijing, China. Paleontologists from 11 countries (China, US,
UK, France, Sweden, Japan, Russia, Argentina, New Zealand, Belgium and
Iran) were involved in the meeting, discussing the international
paleontological development and the international cooperation in the
future.
The meeting was called by Mr. ZHOU Zhonghe, the President of
IPA, the honored member of the Palaeontological Society of China (PSC)
Council and the Chinese Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences
(CAS). Those as the Deputy President, the General Secretary, the General
Accountant, the members of the council and the specially invited
delegates of IPA all attended the meeting. YANG Qun, the President of
PSC, and WANG Yongdong, the General Secretary of PSC were also invited
as the members of the IPA Council. The discussed issues of the meeting
included the future cooperation of IPA with the other international
academic organizations, the communication between different
paleontological branches, choosing the annual discoveries in
paleontological area, establishing the academic awards, strengthening
the membership, developing the IPA website, protecting the world
paleontological parks and maintaining the fossil resources. How to
prepare the International Fossil Day and the next International
Paleontological Conference was hotly debated.
It took two days of warm discussion by the Council to reach
the agreement. The final decision indicated the future direction of the
development of IPA: the PSC would lead to establish the new IPA official
website, and place the server and the administrative organization in
the Institute of Geology and Palaeontology, CAS. China’s major
discoveries and significant accomplishment in paleontological area in
recent years have won great reputation for PSC in the world. Following
the success of the IPC 2006 in Beijing, the good atmosphere made by this
IPA Council meeting in Beijing again will further the development of
the world paleontological cooperation and lead to a bright future of the
Chinese paleontological research.
